“Dogs are great. Bad dogs, if you can really call them that, are perhaps the greatest of them all.” - John Grogan

Happy Thursday! Here's the scoop:

  • The Samoyed with a thirst for adventure

  • It’s all gravy

  • How long should you leave your dog alone? (The answer may surprise you!)

Did you know?
There are two important reasons for dogs’ noses being wet.

(scroll to the bottom to find out!)

Ouka the paragliding Samoyed
One of the many benefits of getting a dog is the opportunity to be more active. For a lot of us, that means going on hikes or playing with our dogs in the park. Of course, some dog parents take their activities to the extreme – and we mean the literal extreme.

Samoyeds are known for their happy disposition, so it’s no surprise that Ouka – a 3-year-old Samoyed – was up for anything, including extreme sports. Recently, Ouka joined his owner up in the air for a day of PARAGLIDING.

Do(g)-It-Yourself
If your dog tends to hang around the dinner table, then you probably know how much dogs love gravy. The next time you want to cook up a special treat, try a rich, savory gravy just for your pup.

This dog-friendly gravy is perfect for topping off dry food at mealtime. It’s sure to make your dog happy, plus it’s a sneaky way to help keep your dog hydrated. There are lots of ways to make dog gravy with ingredients at home, but here’s our favorite (and the easiest way):

Make your own dog gravy:

  • What you’ll need: low-sodium stock or broth, cornstarch, and a small saucepan.

  • Bring the broth to a boil.

  • Whisk in the cornstarch.

  • Boil until it thickens.

  • Let it cool, then serve it warm over your dog’s regular food.

  • Get ready for one happy pup!

How long can you leave your dog alone?
We never like to leave our dogs alone, but sometimes we have no choice. (No matter how much we beg, our pups still haven’t forked over any money to help pay the bills…)

So, how long can you actually leave your dog at home?

It turns out, there isn’t one specific timeframe that experts agree on. The amount of time that a dog can be left alone depends entirely on the dog’s age and breed.

Generally speaking, puppies who are ten weeks or under shouldn’t be left alone for more than an hour. Adult dogs can be left for up to 5 or 6 hours, and you should not leave your dog alone for more than 4 hours frequently (if at all avoidable).

Experts do say that it’s healthy for dogs to learn how to be alone within the recommended time frames. Teaching your dog to fly solo comfortably is helpful for boosting its confidence and improving its mental well-being. If you need help soothing your dog when you have to step out, interactive toys, weighted blankets, or peanut butter treats are all effective and encouraged options.

Did you know?
Dog noses work best when damp because:

  1. Scent particles stick better to damp surfaces. A wet nose elevates a dog’s ability to smell (their most important sense).

  2. Wet noses are cooler. Dogs let out some heat through their foot pads and by panting, but they also utilize the nasal passages as a cooling mechanism!
