Feel Good Friday: Cello player tours the midwest playing calming music for shelter pups
This musician is doing amazing work when it comes to relieving stress for shelter pups.

Des Moines-based cellist Cheryl Wallace spends three days a week traveling to shelters all over the midwest. She sits down with her cello and plays calming music, which is a treat to dogs and shelter workers alike.

Rachel Buchanan, manager of the Almost Home Humane Society of North Central Iowa said, "Last time she came, the dogs were calm for the rest of the day. It was just a quieter afternoon even after she left.” Emerging science suggests that music therapy can be very effective for dogs, with classical music offering the most calming effects.

Since she can’t be everywhere at once, Wallace says she's always on the lookout for fellow dog-loving musicians to join her mission. We’re grateful for this goodhearted dog lover!

Let sleeping dogs lie (+ when and how to wake them)
Some dogs spend a good part of the day snoozing. No matter when your dog likes to nap, it’s important to know how and when to wake your dog up.

No one likes to be startled, and when you suddenly wake your dog, they might have a negative reaction. Help prepare your dog for your entrance by talking or making noise before you enter the room.

If your dog is hard of hearing, you can try stomping on the floor, so your dog will feel the vibrations. This strategy also works well for older dogs, who may not hear you coming.

And of course, if you can avoid waking your pup, let them sleep (and dream)!
