Feel Good Friday: Rock climber makes leashes that give rescue dogs a second chance
Ryan Dempsey found a creative solution to a problem that many of us face. In 2009, Dempsey adopted Rascal, an Australian Shepherd. While he adored his new companion, sweet Rascal would chew up leather couches, his leash, and even the walls in Dempsey’s home.

Dempsey, a rock climber, got the idea to turn his old climbing rope into a leash for Rascal to chew on. Pretty soon, he was making recycled rope leashes for his friends’ dogs and local animal shelters.

In 2012, Dempsey founded Dog Patch SF and its charitable program, Ropes for Rescues. The organization collects climbing ropes, and donates 10% of the profits from their leashes to charity.

Dempsey said, “There’s other ways of using the rope, but this just seems like an obviously beneficial use to breathe new life into this material.” We love to see creative recycling for a good cause!

Do(g)-It-Yourself
If you’re considering making Sunday brunch this weekend, remember to include a spot at the table for your dog.

These all-natural dog waffles are actually healthy, and your dog will absolutely love them.

Make your own dog waffles:

  • What you’ll need: a waffle iron, whole wheat flour, baking powder, apple sauce, coconut oil, Greek yogurt, eggs, strawberries, blueberries, and a banana.

  • Preheat your waffle iron.

  • Mix the flour and baking powder.

  • In a separate bowl, mix the apple sauce, coconut oil, Greek yogurt, and egg yolks.

  • Stir in the dry ingredients.

  • Beat the egg whites until they’re stiff, then fold them into the batter.

  • Add the batter to the waffle iron.

  • Cook the waffles completely.

  • Allow them to cool, then add the fruity toppings.

  • Enjoy Sunday brunch with your pup!

Do dogs remember their siblings?
Odds are, your dog has some siblings out there that they haven’t seen in awhile. Since canines can remember human faces, are they able to remember their doggie siblings?

If your dog hasn’t seen their siblings since they were puppies, the answer is probably not. Newborn puppies don’t have all of their senses – including sight and hearing. So, while dogs are somewhat likely to remember their mother, they are less likely to remember their siblings.

In a scientific study, puppies were able to recognize their littermates 67% of the time. After two years, their ability to recognize siblings drops. However, their recognition will depend a lot on how much time they spend with their siblings.

On the bright side, while dogs may not remember their biological family, they certainly can recognize you – their chosen family.
