Feel Good Friday: Paws for Life K9 Rescue
We love to see dogs and people helping each other out, and this incredible program is benefitting both shelter dogs and incarcerated people.

Paws for Life K9 Rescue is an animal rescue program that pairs dogs from high intake shelters with incarcerated trainers who help the dogs become more adoptable.

"Our mission is two-fold," Josh Grobman, Director of Programs for Paws for Life, said. "One, we are saving the lives of animals, but we are also heavily focused on rehabilitation and transformation within the California penal system."

Grobman himself was an incarcerated trainer who worked with Mallie, a very sweet therapy dog. When Grobman was paroled, Mallie became despondent in his absence. Thankfully, Grobman’s parents adopted Mallie, so the two could stay together.

Today, Mallie works as a trained service dog who can retrieve items like medicine. Grobman recalled, "I was so heavily impacted by the unconditional love of an animal that it really started to change how I saw myself.” He added, “They look back at you like you're human. And the human element is something that's missing inside our prison system.”

How to tell how big your puppy will get
When you adopt a puppy, it’s easy to get lost in their adorable eyes and forget that they will soon grow into an adult dog. The reality is that puppies grow up fast! How can you predict the size your puppy will grow to?

There are a few factors to consider.

If you know your dog’s breed, it’s pretty easy to get a ballpark estimate. However, even within known breeds there are sometimes outliers. If you know how big your dog’s parents were, that’s a pretty solid way to predict how big your puppy will get.

Alternatively, if you know the exact age of your puppy, you can run some simple equations to calculate their adult weight. Newborn puppies generally double their weight after one week. After the first week, they grow approximately 5-10% each day.

Make sure to plan ahead so your dog will have enough play space as they get older. This way, they can live a happy and healthy life well into maturity!
