Feel Good Friday: “Chief Cuddle Officer” therapy dog offers children support in court proceedings
Going to court is never easy, and it can be particularly stressful for children. Thankfully, a social worker in Akron, Ohio has a new team member working alongside him to help kids relax during court proceedings: Tater Tot the therapy dog.

Tater Tot, a three-and-a-half-year-old collie mix, completed an 18 month training program with the Canine Assistance Rehabilitation Education & Services to prepare for the job. He now knows 56 commands. His favorite command? Giving a hug.

Judge Linda Tucci Teodosio said that Tater Tot – whose badge reads “Chief Cuddle Officer” – helps reduce stress throughout the building. “Quite frankly, I think Tater Tot lends some support to us who maybe sometimes experience secondary trauma as a result of the very tough stories that we hear each and every day,” Teodosio said.

We’re so grateful that this sweet pup is bringing comfort to so many people! Read more about Tater Tot here.

Do(g)-It-Yourself
Are you a puppy parent? Bringing a puppy home is very exciting but can also be overwhelming at first. Creating a consistent routine for your puppy will help them thrive in their new environment.
How do you get started? Here’s how to create a schedule for your puppy:

How to Create a Puppy Schedule:
First, take a look at your schedule and figure out what activities you can consistently commit to.

Consider these five elements that your pup will need:

  1. Feeding – Puppies need three meals a day, plus fresh water throughout the day.

  2. Potty-time – Pups will need to go out every 1-4 hours.

  3. Enrichment & playtime – 15-20 minutes of interactive toys and puzzles will help your pup develop and will help reduce their anxiety.

  4. Socialization & learning – whether you take your dog to the park or enroll your dog in training classes, socialization is an important part of helping your pup adjust and grow.

  5. Rest – The sooner you implement a regular schedule for short naps and bedtime, the sooner your pup will start to sync up with a sleep schedule that works for you.

Once you put together your schedule, hang it up on the fridge so you will see it and stick to it. Check out this example for how to put together a puppy schedule.

How do dogs learn words?
When it comes to training your dog, the words that you use as commands are especially important for your dog to learn. So how do dogs learn new words?

According to a recent article in Psychology Today, dogs use their sense of hearing to determine whether a particular word is a thing, a verb, or an affirmation. When trying to teach your dog a new word – such as "sit," "walk," "treat," and "out" – it’s best to repeat the word while making eye contact with your dog.

Here’s another pro-tip: Be sure that everyone in your household is using the same word to teach your dog a new command. For instance, if you use the word “stay” and your partner uses the word “wait,” your dog will become confused.

Dogs have the capacity to learn a lot of words. One Border Collie wowed audiences by recognizing 200 words on a TV appearance. However, as long as your dog can nail down the basics, you’ll be able to communicate with your pup!
