You’ve probably heard some rumors about “pit bulls.” But what is a pit bull exactly? It turns out that, as a result of “many generations of random breeding and bad PR, the term pit bull doesn’t refer to a single breed, but rather, a group of breeds.
While there are differences among specific breeds, there are some common characteristics that “pit bulls” share. Pit bulls are generally known for their muscular builds, blocky heads, and shorter snouts.
What are the breeds that get lumped into the term “pit bull”?
American Pit Bull Terriers. Naturally loyal and affectionate, these terriers have strong prey drives.
American Staffordshire Terriers. Loyal and playful, Staffies are slightly larger than Pit Bull Terriers.
American Bulldogs. With deeper chests and shorter muzzles, these dogs are cuddly and love to sit in laps.
American Bullies. The American Bully was recognized by the UKC in 2013. Stocky and compact, these dogs are sadly prone to health issues.
