Best in show
Thanksgiving can be stressful (duh). But if there’s one thing we know, being in the presence of dogs can put a smile on anybody’s face. Enter: 200+ of the most fabulous ones in the biz.
Grab your dog and the remote, the Annual Thanksgiving National Dog Show is returning for its 20th year. The show airs Thanksgiving Day on NBC at noon in all time zones, after the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade and before the football games. Here’s how it works:
Only purebred dogs registered with the American Kennel Club can compete. 208 dog breeds and varieties are recognized and split into 7 groups - Sporting, Terrier, Toy, Working, Hound, Non-Sporting and Herding. More than 2,000 of the top AKC-sanctioned dogs from across the U.S. will attend this year’s fierce competition.
The first-round dogs compete against their own breed for the “Best in Breed” title. That winner will then go on to rep the breed for “First in Group.” This round is based on how well they fit their own breed standards. From there, the winners from each group go on to the prized “Best in Show” round to compete for ultimate top dog.
The most exciting news this year? A new breed is taking the stage. Pronounced “beaver,” the Biewer Terrier is a long-haired, tri-colored toy terrier, which according to the AKC, has only one purpose in life: “to love and be loved.” (excuse us while we melt)
The AKC describes Biewers as having a “charming, whimsical attitude” and “dedicated, loyal, happy-go-lucky and a friend to all they meet.” While they may be small, they’re also “hearty and athletic and able to keep up with the best of them on long walks, hikes or competing in the agility ring.”
2020’s Best In Show winner: Claire, Scottish Deerhound.
