Feel Good Friday: This chef cooks 3-course Thanksgiving meals for shelter animals
"Them alone while we celebrate with friends and family did not sit well with me." said Malik Von Saint, the Buffalo, New York chef who’s gained quite a large four-legged following thanks to his gourmet meals for shelter animals.
A few years ago, Chef Malik Von Saint adopted his now inseparable companion, Cannoli, right around the holidays. This got him thinking about all of the dogs up for adoption at the shelter, and how he could bring them a little more comfort while waiting for their people. Enter: a 3-course Thanksgiving feast fit for kings.
The chef prepared a menu centered around pet-safe ingredients that he knew the animals would love. To no one’s surprise, the furry residents at the Friends of the City of Buffalo Animal Shelter absolutely devoured the dishes, and the chef agreed to continue the tradition.
One Thanksgiving, Von Malik served (on white china and all) beef tartare followed by chicken sous-vide with roasted sweet potato and basmati rice, garnished with broccoli florets. Homemade dog ice cream - "Crème glacée de woof” - was served for dessert. (Can we come next year??)
On top of pampering them with this special meal and making them feel extra loved, Von Saint hopes his holiday dinners will draw attention to the shelter's dogs and cats and help them find their fur-ever homes.
Do(g)-It-Yourself
It’s the first day after Thanksgiving, so you probably aren’t sick of your leftovers quite yet. But when you inevitably hit that post-Turkey Day “If I have to have one more bite of stuffing or mashed potatoes I WILL freak out” feeling, we’ve got your solution: pull in your pup!
The best part about this recipe is that it’s super simple and completely customizable based on what leftovers you still have on hand. Plus, there’s no one one earth who would be more grateful to lend a helping paw in terms of finishing off some food.
Thanksgiving Leftovers Doggie Scramble
Ingredients:
Eggs
Leftover cooked vegetables (we like green beans, sweet potatoes, carrots, and corn)
Optional: unseasoned mashed potatoes, unseasoned turkey, spinach, kale
Note: we generally stick with the ratio of 1 egg per dog, but feel free to up your quantities if you have an XL dog in your crew!
Instructions:
Heat an un-greased skillet on medium until hot. Add your leftover veggies and/or unseasoned turkey to the pan. Crack the egg(s) over your leftovers and start scrambling. Stir occasionally until the egg is thoroughly cooked. Set the scramble aside until cool, or toss in the freezer for a quick cool-down. Plate your scramble (bonus cuteness points if you opt for the fancy thanksgiving dishware) and call in your happy helper to gobble it up! Bone appétit.
