Christmas miracle or mayhem?
It’s no secret that Christmastime is full of magic and stories that go against the basic laws of nature (gravity-defying reindeer, a generous old man who can travel the entirety of earth in one night, etc…). But one legend, most common in parts of Europe, was new to us this year: the fable that claims that at the stroke of midnight on Christmas Eve, animals gain the power of speech.
Being able to talk to our dogs is like the ultimate dream come true, so we had to know more. We did a deep dive into this strange lore of Christmas and it might now be one of our favorites.
The legend is applied to farm animals and household pets alike, and usually stems from the storytellers’ beliefs that Jesus’s birth occurred at exactly midnight on Christmas Day, leading to various supernatural occurrences.
Some versions of the tale are lighthearted and speak of animals inexplicably gaining the ability to communicate with their humans, while others turn a little more sinister (as most fairytales do).
Whether you find humor or hope in this long-standing legend, we have to assume you’re just as curious as we are about what our dogs would say when the clock strikes midnight. Listen up (and of course, let us know if you hear anything unusual from your pup). 😉
Feliz naughty dog!
