Check out the new phone that allows you to "call" your dog
Want to connect with your dog when you’re out of the house? In recent years, new technologies that allow dog owners to check on their furry friends (like nanny cams and treat dispensers) have become increasingly popular. Now, a new technology aims to put the control in your dog’s hands – err, paws.
Dr. Ilyena Hirskyj-Douglas at the University of Glasgow has developed a DogPhone. It allows dogs to FaceTime their owners by moving a ball.
How does it work? The ball is connected to a phone. When it’s triggered, the device sends a call to the owner’s phone and laptop. Dr. Hirskyj-Douglas explains, “If I answer, then I appear on the screen in our lounge with video and audio. Likewise, my dog could answer the call if I rang him by moving the ball. In this way, it is both audio and visual-based.”
The DogPhone is not quite ready to hit store shelves. In Dr. Hirskyj-Douglas’ initial study with 10-year-old Labrador Retriever, Zack, most of the phone calls seemed to be accidental. However, it’s possible that with further research, you may one day be able to chat on the phone with your pup!

Is Your Dog Stressed Out? These Are the Signs to Watch Out For
Stress can be the underlying reason behind a variety of health issues – in both dogs and humans. Unlike fear and anxiety, stress can be a little more subtle and harder to detect in your pup. So, how do you know if your dog is feeling stressed?
According to Kim Krug, a veterinary behavior resident at Animal Behavior Clinic in Portland, "Stress is any event or situation that leads to a physical, psychological, or emotional change.”
If your dog exhibits any of these signs, they could be experiencing stress:
- Tense, hunched body posture or face
- Lowered head
- Whale eye (aka side eye)
- Hair standing on end
- Heavy panting
- Barking or whining
- Yawning, licking, or drooling
- Trembling
- Submissive body language
- Intermittently holding one leg up
- Pacing
- Freezing in place or running away
Some common triggers of stress in dogs include loud noises, strangers (including people and animals), crowded places, children, cars, and trips to the vet or groomer.
If you notice that your dog is in a stressful situation, the first step is to get your dog out of that situation as quickly as possible. If it’s unclear what is causing your dog’s stress, there isn't a one-size-fits-all cure. However, punishing your dog definitely will not help things.
If you want to help your dog learn to feel more comfortable in a particular setting – like a crowded farmer’s market or park – use positive reinforcement. If your dog exhibits chronic stress, see your vet.
