Animal rescue spotlight: Marley's Mutts
Things were not looking good for Zach Skow back in 2009. After struggling with addiction, Skow was diagnosed with end-stage liver disease. Luckily, he survived and when he got out of the hospital, his three rescue dogs were there to help him recover.
Inspired by the love he received from his pups, Skow started fostering more dogs. He would post pictures and write little biographies of the dogs he rescued. A community starting to spring up organically, and that’s the story behind Marley’s Mutts, a California-based animal rescue.
By 2019, Marley’s Mutts has managed to basically eliminate euthanasia in its home base of Kern County.
Skow also runs Pawsitive Change, a rehabilitation program that matches dogs with incarcerated people in California prisons. Inmates train the dogs to get them ready to be adopted, while developing skills that will help them find jobs when they’re released.
Of course, Skow couldn’t do it alone. Cora Rose – a sweet pup and a double-leg amputee (pictured below) – is Skow’s “right-hand woman.” We think they make a great team!

This 3-month study reveals which words dogs love the most
Do you know your dog’s favorite word? You may have a pretty good guess, but a new study examined exactly this question. Check out the results.
OnBuy, a retailer in the United Kingdom, surveyed over 4,000 pet owners to find out which words or phrases make their dogs perk up – which they judged by an elevated heart rate.
The second and third place words were all food-related: “Dinner/food/eat” and “treat.” We all know that dogs love food and treats, so this really comes as no surprise.
However, the word that made dogs perk up the most? (Drumroll, please…) “Walkies.” Remember that this was a British study, so we can assume that “walk” would be the equivalent.
What’s interesting is that, while the way to a dog’s heart might be through their stomach, a walk around the block is just as exciting.

Did you know?
Answer: Cocker Spaniel! The idea that dogs are capable of identifying cancerous samples by scent was first confirmed by a study done with six dogs in England in 2004.
In that study, a Cocker Spaniel named Tangle had the best success rate at detecting cancer, with 56% accuracy. Researchers continued to work with Tangle, and his success rate improved to 80%.
